Resource Links From Images
You can create a link from an image to a page, attachment, image, or element by assigning the xref
attribute to an inline or block image macro.
Xref element attribute
The xref
element attribute can be set in the attribute list of block and inline image macros.
The xref
attribute is optional.
It’s structured and behaves the same way regardless of whether you assign it to a block image macro or inline image macro.
The xref
attribute accepts the resource ID of a publishable resource—a page, attachment, or image—as a value.
image::an-image.jpg[xref=version@component:module:family$file.ext]
It also accepts the ID of an element that’s specified in the current page.
The element ID must be prefixed with the hash symbol (#
) when assigned to the xref
attribute.
image::an-image.gif[xref=#fragment]
When your site is published and a visitor selects the embedded image, they’ll be linked to the URL of the published resource or jump to the anchor in the current published page that corresponds to the specified element ID.
The xref
attribute in a named attribute.
If you set positional attributes, such as alt text, width, or height, on the image macro, assign them in the attribute list before setting the xref
or any other named attributes.
image:an-image.svg[The image alt text,xref=version@component:module:family$file.ext,title="A tooltip for the image"]
Positional and named element attributes are separated by commas in the attribute list of the image macros.
Link to a page from an image
To reference a page from an embedded image, set the xref
attribute in the attribute list, followed by an equals sign (=
), and then the resource ID of the target page.
How many of the target page’s resource ID coordinates you need to specify depends on the component version and module of the target page in relation to the current page.
image::console.svg[xref=modes.adoc] (1)
1 | The resource ID assigned to xref only specifies the file coordinate of the page because, for this example, let’s assume the current page and target page belong to the same component version and module. |
The block image macro shown in Example 4 will embed the image console.svg into the current page and create a link from the image to the published URL of the target page.
You can also append a fragment to the end of the page’s resource ID to link to an element within the page.
In Example 5, a fragment that corresponds to the element ID protocols
that’s set in the content of modes.adoc is appended to the end of the resource ID for modes.adoc.
image::console.svg[xref=modes.adoc#protocols]
You can also link to an element ID in the current page.
Link to an attachment from an image
To reference an attachment from an embedded image, set the xref
attribute in the attribute list, followed by an equals sign (=
), and then the resource ID of the target attachment.
Make sure the family coordinate, attachment$
, is specified in the value assigned to the xref
attribute.
Example 6 shows an inline image macro with three positional attributes set in the macro’s attribute list, followed by the named xref
attribute.
The xref
attribute is assigned the resource ID of an attachment.
Select the image:red-dot.jpg[Red circle,40,40,xref=telemetry:attachment$flight-patterns.pdf]. (1) (2)
1 | Positional attributes are optional.
If you do set one or more positional attributes on an image macro, assign them in the attribute list before setting xref or any other named attributes.
In this example, the positional attributes alt , width , and height are set in the order accepted by the image macros. |
2 | The resource ID assigned to xref specifies the module, attachment$ , and file coordinate of the target attachment because, for this example, let’s assume the target attachment belongs to a different module than the current page.
The attachment$ coordinate is always required when the resource is an attachment. |
The inline image macro shown in Example 6 will embed the image red-dot.jpg into the current page and create a link from the image to the published URL of the target attachment.
Deep link to an element in the current page from an image
To reference an element in the current page, assign the ID of the element to the xref
attribute.
Prefix the element ID with the hash symbol (#
) when you assign it to the xref
attribute.
Example 7 shows a block image macro with an xref
attribute assigned an element ID that corresponds to an ID on the current page.
image::panorama.png[xref=#elevation] (1)
The range can be traversed by Cottonwood Pass, Independence Pass, or Hagerman Pass.
[#elevation] (2)
== Pass elevations
The passes usually open in late spring.
1 | Set the xref attribute in the attribute list, followed by an equals sign (= ), the hash symbol (# ), and then an element ID that corresponds to the ID assigned to an element in the current page. |
2 | An element ID set on and assigned to a section in the current page. |
The block image macro shown in Example 7 will embed the image panorama.png into the current page and create a link from the image to the beginning of the section Pass elevations on the current page.
